The Causes of the War
The Fugitive Slave Act, part of the Compromise of 1820, meant that slaves could be captured and returned to the South. It also made it a crime to assist a runaway slave.
John Brown was a violent abolitionist who led a raid on an armory at Harper's Ferry, Virginia to take the weapons to begin a slave revolt.
